The Moro Spanish Film Festival 2022
Organised by Palace returns this year with a jam-packed program for all audiences.
34 films will be screened celebrating the Spanish language with two key sections: New Spanish Cinema and Cine Latino.
The festival kicks off on the 15 of April and will travel nationally to Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Byron Bay.
This year, the program proudly includes an Australian Connection - a spotlight on the work made by Latin-Australian filmmakers with the screening of the locally produced documentary OUR VOICES directed by Diana Páez and produced by Latin Stories Australia (Melbourne).
These are the five films, we think you shouldn’t miss from this year's program:
The inaugural film of the festival. Starring Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, about a wealthy businessman who hires a famous filmmaker to help make a smash hit film. A comedy from Argentinian duplet Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat where they explore the atrocity of competitive art. Part of the official selection at San Sebastian Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival and well received by audience and critics. A special event is scheduled for the opening night of this festival with food, drinks and live entertainment.
A powerful collection of testimonials of Spanish-speaking migrants who arrived in Victoria between the 1960s and 1980s, telling their stories of strength and resilience and their contribution to modern Australian society. Directed by Colombian-Australian Film director Diana Páez, this documentary, will take you on a journey of what it was to be an immigrant back in the 60’s and 80’s and what has changed. The screening of the film will be followed by a special Q&A session with the director in Melbourne and Perth. BUY TICKETS HERE
The story is about the father of Colombian writer Hector Abad Faciolince. A university professor who promoted tolerance and human rights in his country. It is a moving film based on a book of the same title. Directed by Fernando Trueba. It was selected to be shown at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival and selected as the Colombian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards.
The film follows a Spanish teacher and her student whose online connection takes on far more importance than either could have anticipated. For his 45th birthday, wealthy Californian Adam (Duplass) receives a surprise gift from his choreographer partner: 100 weekly Spanish lessons with Cariño (Morales), a vivacious expat who teaches virtually from her home in Costa Rica. Directed by actress Natalie Morales (parks and recreation) and written in collaboration with Mark Duplass. This film, that premiered at the Berlin Film Festival is an exploration of friendship and connection.
Three men and a woman, all of them dentists, travel to the Mayan Riviera to assist a congress. Each of them is running from their own painful story. So, when they escape to a small nearby paradise island where they can party with privacy, the harmony between the four breaks into a journey of jealousy and destruction. Directed by Carlos Cuarón (Alfonso Cuarón's brother) writer of the popular film Y Tu Mama También, this film is a dramedy reflecting on the relationships between colleagues and the role of ego within friendship.
